To examine the relationship between state policy environments and women’s health outcomes, I compared each state’s normalized Policy Score with its normalized Health Outcome Score. These scores were chosen because they capture the overall supportiveness or restrictiveness of women’s health–related policies and the measurable outcomes associated with women’s health across states. By analyzing them together, I aimed to understand whether supportive policy environments are associated with stronger health outcomes for women.
A scatterplot was created in Tableau using Policy Score on the x-axis and Health Outcome Score on the y-axis, with each point representing a single U.S. state. When plotted, a clear pattern emerged. States with higher policy scores tended to appear toward the upper right of the chart, meaning they also had stronger women’s health outcomes. In contrast, states with lower policy scores clustered toward the lower left, reflecting weaker outcomes. The upward slope of the trend line reinforced this visual pattern and suggested an overall positive relationship between the two measures.
To quantify this relationship, I calculated a Pearson correlation coefficient using the same dataset. The result was approximately r = 0.67, which indicates a moderate-to-strong positive correlation between state policy environments and women’s health outcomes. In practical terms, this means that states with more supportive women’s health policies are more likely to achieve better women’s health results. Although correlation does not prove direct causation, a coefficient of this size is unlikely to occur by chance and suggests a meaningful relationship worth paying attention to.
This correlation does not imply that policy alone is responsible for these differences, and it cannot capture all the socioeconomic, demographic, and structural factors that influence women’s health. However, the strength of the association supports a growing body of research showing that policy environments shape access to care, affordability, resources, and preventive services, all of which influence outcomes over time. The consistency of the trend across states reinforces the idea that policy context matters, and that differences in state-level legislation and support frameworks can have measurable effects on the health of women.
Overall, the analysis suggests that supportive policies and stronger women’s health outcomes tend to move together in a significant and predictable way. States that have adopted more supportive policies consistently show better levels of women’s health, while states with more restrictive environments tend to fall behind. This finding helps highlight the real-world implications of policy decisions and underscores why examining state policy environments is important for understanding women’s health nationally.
